All At Sea - Hardcore, Metal - UK
I think it’s safe to say that metal/hardcore is one of the most crowded genres in the music scene. Every single day, bands come and go, most without ever even making a whisper, and if fans are expected to perpetually support and invest in these fleeting acts, even though they could be gone tomorrow, how long could the style last before disappearing itself? If there is any justice at all in metal, though, All At Sea, hailing from the United Kingdom, won’t disappear prematurely.
In a scene that’s oversaturated and ever-changing, All At Sea desperately needed to find a way to stick out from the masses, and as I’ve been blasting their latest EP, “Destroy/Rebuild”, in my car, it has become clear to me that the band has worked exceedingly hard to refine their sound, in hopes of not becoming just another hardcore band. Pairing high-pitched vocals with impressive speed from drummer Tom Cox, “Destroy/Rebuild” rises above most other independent metal releases this year and sits comfortably as a bright light in the genre’s excessive darkness.
“Reckless,” which can be heard on the band’s YouTube and BandPage, is a great introduction to All At Sea’s sound, with its frantic vocals and blistering tempo. Of course, a breakdown hits about a minute in (no surprises there), but it hits so much harder simply because the band carries the fast pace from the introduction over into the heavier section, adding a refreshing blast of energy to an often cookie-cutter, uninteresting convention of the genre. “Thrones” keeps up the pace with an absolutely ridiculous introduction, speeding through riff after riff before getting to one of the most angry lines the band has to offer: “I hope you f*cking burn in hell!”
This blatant lyricism often has a way of turning me off of the genre, but All At Sea can get away with it because the vocalist’s delivery is so outwardly aggressive. All too often, we hear metal vocalists “screaming” with that weird part of their throat, in hopes of faking the sound of true, unrestrained aggression—but they never fool me. All At Sea really is angry, though. They really do have that fury that all of these impermanent bands continuously seem to lack, which makes them completely worthy of your time and attention. There’s no better band to blow off some steam with than one that is doing that same thing themselves.
