Maggie Baugh - Country, Singer-songwriter - Boca Raton, FL ("Run By The Clock")
When I first popped “Run By The Clock” by Maggie Baugh into my stereo, I was immediately impressed with the strong, soulful vocals, resembling something like a less nasally Taylor Swift—a very welcomed departure in my book. Tackling the topic of disease, the lyrics were certainly of an esoteric ilk, handling the topic with poise and passion, as if she’d been discussing it all her life. “This is pretty great” I thought, and began picturing Maggie as a late high school or early college artist, someone who has been refining her writing for years. The song continued to electrify my ears, sprinkling guitar solos and classical violin over a dark and brooding country foundation, all working together to create this engaging sound. I quickly hit “Replay” after the conclusion, and eager for more, I made my way over to Baugh’s website to hear her other material. You can imagine my surprise when I learned the voice behind this equally professional and enjoyable track was only 13 years old.
Only songwriting for two years, Maggie Baugh has already significantly surpassed both her peers and those in their twenties. She’s a virtuoso, excelling on the guitar, fiddle and violin, and a prolific performer, having played over 70 venues and events in 2013 alone. She’s got a full length album of her own material that was recorded in Nashville, the city of the greats, and even better still: she has a cause.
If you purchase “Run By The Clock” online, all of the proceeds will go directly to medical research for Glycogen Storage Disease, which affects two of Maggie’s younger brothers. Having only heard of the condition, I had no clear idea of just how serious GSD was, but the Youtube music video for the song cleverly informs you while simultaneously entertaining with Maggie’s song about the disease. The video tells us that only 1 in 100,000 people are diagnosed with GSD, which deleteriously disrupts the body’s process of breaking down sugars. Those with the condition have to live on a strict timed diet of snacks and cornstarch, thus living by the clock.
Maggie has lived by the clock all her life, but luckily, the clock isn’t all bad. Baugh has all the time in the world to prove just how great of an artist she is, and she’s already way ahead of the game in almost every single aspect of writing and performing. When I was 13, I was busy replaying “Kingdom Hearts” for my third time, but Maggie is practicing, writing, and falling in love with music, honing her craft. What’s even better is that she isn’t doing it for money—she’s doing it to help her family and those who need it. Music should always be made to help people, and thankfully, we have bright stars like Maggie Baugh to remind us of that.
