Foultrail Studio - Mixing/mastering (and soon-to-be more!)
Summer 2014. As I’m in the thick of this snow that’s currently bombarding the east coast, there’s already a lot for me to look forward to in the warmer months. Temperature aside, though, there seems to be another warm light for me, this time emanating across the great Atlantic pond in the form of Foul Trail Studio, a new audio engineering facility based in Finland that’s poised to put Finnish sound production on the map.
While Foul Trail isn’t officially open quite yet (you’d be surprised at how much investment you actually need to start a real recording business), the two sample mixes of what the studio can offer, both of which are conveniently streaming on Soundcloud, are more than enough to convince your band to postpone your record until the summertime—just so you can get into Foul Trail.
At the helm is Aleksi Oksa, who, when not recording, can be found tearing it up in his Helsinki-based metalcore outfit, Of Illusions, a band with two great singles under their belt and a full release on the way in the coming months. While having a classically trained audio engineer with a college degree and years of hitting the books never hurts, Oksa brings a unique set of skills to the table that you generally can’t learn from a book. As a musician himself, Oksa knows that each band likes to have their own sound, and he is more than willing to work with you every step of the way to get that sound for you! He knows how bands like to record, how to make a session comfortable but productive, and he certainly knows how to twist a knob or two in the right direction for you.
A studio run by a musician for other musicians—can’t get any better than that, can you? With an already great concept laid out, Foul Trail has nowhere to go but up, and although the studio’s location is somewhat remote when compared to others set up in Metalcore and Djent havens like England and the United States, Oksa has technology on his side. Even when he can’t physically be there for you, he can produce and master your work like he was sitting right next to you through the entire session.
You send your mixes to him, he masters them. Want Foul Trail to mix your songs? No problem. Just send the session file through the electronic ether, and before you know it, Oksa will shoot it back to you, packaged, polished, glossed, and ready for the world to hear. Foul Trail even offers audio editing, which most studios tend to avoid these days just out of pure laziness, but we should know by this point that Oksa isn’t going to take the easy way out.
After all of the hard work—the countless late nights adjusting level after level, twisting knobs across the board, pumping the bass up, then down, then back up again—Foul Trail still won’t show any signs of stopping, and will move right on to the next project, insatiable in their craft. This is dedication and passion at its finest, quality and professionalism at its cheapest. Summer 2014 seems like a long way away right now, but I assure you, it’s going to be worth the wait.
