A Zombie Ate My Cupcake - Alt, Metal - Arlington, TX
A Zombie Ate My Cupcake released their most recent EP “Scars” in September 2012. The talented members claim that they are not afraid to try new things, and after listening to the EP, it is quite apparent that the band is attempting to do something very different. What’s even better is—they do a damn good job at it.
Combining two vastly different genres like alternative and metal is no easy task, but A Zombie Ate My Cupcake is somehow able to succeed with almost no trouble, flawlessly stringing together melodic alternative sections with heavy metal choruses all throughout their “Scars” EP.
“Ro-Langs”, The first full track on the EP, is a great example of this. The verses are all very low key with quiet, throaty vocals that lull the listener into a false sense of security. Then suddenly, a heavy chorus slams its way into the song, drastically picking up the energy. The vocalist showcases his skill here by belting a low, powerful growl that contrasts nicely with his softer, scratchy voice.
Another fantastic song on the EP is “Step[Son]”. This peice begins with an eerie, ominous bassline. Next, a beautiful guitar melody comes in, which is some of the most melodic music that A Zombie Ate My Cupcake has to offer on “Scars.” After this great alternative section, the band surprises the listener once again as an extremely heavy bridge comes out of nowhere, all before gradually returning to the beautiful melody one last time, just as the song concludes.
The diversity on the “Scars” EP is extremely impressive, and A Zombie Ate My Cupcake is definitely a band that both metal and alternative fans will enjoy. As if the music isn’t great enough, the lyrics can get extremely dark and introspective at times, which is something that many newer bands fail to achieve. Really getting to a listener’s emotional core is not simple at all, but A Zombie Ate My Cupcake does this with ease. I can only imagine how diverse and intense their next release will be, which is expected to drop sometime in 2013. Definitely give this band a chance!
