“Glisten” is all we have to go on what the full length album will sound like, but if the track’s swelling piano and almost post-rock influence throughout is any indication of what’s to come, we are in for quite the treat in 2014. At over five minutes in length, “Glisten” can certainly be a hefty pill to swallow for the more ADD members of our music scene (guilty as charged, sometimes), though the spacious, slow-reveal nature of Drift’s music actually seems to be its strongest aspect—assuming you’re willing to invest the time.
Drift is a bright light in the darkness though, as your investment will be rewarded handsomely in “Glisten” by the track’s conclusion. The song opens with some very well-produced vocals, which are as crisp and clear as ever, and the track slowly swells to an all-out explosion of euphoria and emotion. The instrumental section following the second chorus is absolutely gushing with passion, the heartbreak and loss so palpable that you can almost feel it yourself. Lyrics like “Take a glimpse of the love you once had within / And glisten in the light you once stood in” will pull at your heartstrings harder will each listen.
Drift has offered a few videos of some cover songs, but if you truly want to prepare yourself for the greatness that will overtake you in 2014, I recommend making your way over to Youtube to check out “Glisten” immediately. Give the track the time it deserves, and you’ll suddenly see why Drift may be the biggest new band in the world by this time next year.
